The Brief

Located down a  quiet cul-de-sac off of Holland Road, 24 Garlick Avenue was designed in a Colonial “Black & White” style for an expatriate English family looking for a modern interpretation of the classic residential style. Prevalent through Singapore and Malaysia circa 1900 - 1940 “Black & White” Residences featured high ceilings,  wide eaves and natural ventilation all designed to capture the breeze, whilst protecting the occupants from rain. They featured white stuccoed walls and typically black painted timber work along with terra cotta flooring and timber balconies.

Taking advantage of the heavily forested natural reserve at the rear of the property, the building was positioned at the back of the site without fear of being overlooked. The positioning of the building opened up the front yard to allow for extensive lawn areas and planting as well as space for a Swimming Pool.

Extensively used for entertaining, the ground floor rooms open up onto terraces overlooking the lawn, whilst the private bedrooms and office areas of the residence are located on the upper floors.

Incorporating turn of the century timber fretwork and detailing, the interior of the  house was given a modern twist through colourful fabrics and colours.

Master Suite with extensive Walk-in Robe and Bathroom, Study/ Gym, 3 additional Bedrooms with Ensuites and Maid’s Quarters at the 1st floor. Play area, Media room and Storage Zone at Attic.
